Glutathione is a compound produced by the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It is a powerful antioxidant that is produced in the liver. It is present in fruits and vegetables.
What are the benefits of Glutathione?
Glutathione is known as the anti- ageing amino acid. It is a protein which possesses powerful antioxidant properties which inhibit and protect from the formation of free radicals which damage cells. Glutathione has been shown to have a protective effect against age-related conditions and diseases and is very helpful in detoxifying substances from the body.
Glutathione not only plays an important role in antioxidant defence, but it also is important for nutrient metabolism, and regulation of cellular events (including gene expression, DNA and protein synthesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis, signal transduction, cytokine production and immune response, and protein glutathionylation). There is no established Recommended Daily Intake for Glutathione.
Glutathione deficiency contributes to oxidative stress, which plays a key role in aging and the pathogenesis of many diseases (including kwashiorkor, seizure, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia, HIV, AIDS, cancer, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes).
Immunity- Glutathione is reported to be a ‘regenerator of immune cells’ and the ‘most valuable detoxifying agent in the body’. Low levels are associated with early aging, and even death (1).
Cardiovascular Health– Glutathione is also thought to support cardiovascular health by inhibiting the oxidation of cholesterol and the formation of plaques accumulation in the arteries (2).
Diabetes- Glutathione is also thought to protect against the complications of diabetes by reducing infections and circulatory problems (3).

Safety and side effects
Glutathione is considered safe when taken orally, by inhalation or injection. Not enough is known about the possible side effects of Glutathione however it is not recommended for use during pregnancy or asthmatics. There is no established Tolerable Upper Intake Level for Glutathione.
